Housing Targets Raised Again!

UK Government recently raised the target number of new homes again. The targets for homes in East Surrey were raised significantly in July, five months later the targets have been raised again! It will take time for the revised targets to be incorporated into the Local Plan for each borough. The changes impact every borough council and unitary authority in England. The increases are in general in rural areas, not for urban areas.

The targets for Elmbridge and Reigate & Banstead have been more than doubled compared with the targets for early 2024.

Please support the petition asking UK government to reduce the excessive targets for new homes in Surrey. More signatures are required! Please sign the petition and ask others to do so.

Borough Old New Growth
Elmbridge 653 1443 121%
Elmbridge 653 1562 139% December

Epsom and Ewell 569 817 43%
Epsom and Ewell 569 889 53% December

Mole Valley 460 757 65%
Mole Valley 460 833 81% December

Reigate and Banstead 644 1264 96%
Reigate and Banstead 644 1306 103% December

The average for Epsom and Ewell is 2.5 persons per house, so the new target of 889 homes per year is likely to cause the population to rise by 2,223 per year, or 35,560 additional people by 2040. This is a huge increase for a borough that had a population of 81,184 in 2022.

How will the roads, schools and NHS cope with a large number of extra people? The options are limited or none for improving the flow of traffic through Epsom. There are limited alternatives for avoiding the centre on Epsom as the town is surrounded by green belt in most directions.
